2013 R.I.P - 2014 Come on down!!!!

Well as 2013 is now over and done with I thought I would do a little post with a couple of drawings I was proud to do in 2013 as a little recap for new visitors as well as reminding me of how much I have improved over the year and to help me get motivated to continue my efforts in 2014.

Random drawing of mysterious female eyes

This drawing was inspired by some old black and white films based on greek mythology in which a sorceress or oracle is watching the main protagonists in their journey and causing them trouble along the way.  

Art 14. Hellboy

Hellboy Inspired Drawing.

This is a drawing that I did after watching the film Hellboy last night. I then looked at the art work from the comic book. I really love the style of Mike Mignola's art work so I decided to try and replicate his colouring and shading technique as much as possible. 

Sunday Sketches 2. I, Frankenstein.

Sunday Sketches - I,Frankenstein drawing. (week 1)

So this is how this piece came to be. Last night I was flicking through all the new and different movie trailers that have been released this year because well, I'm a movie geek as well as a wanna be artist. 

While I was flicking through the numerous trailers, I stumbled upon the I,Frankenstein trailer. So in my creative an made productive mood, I decided, well compelled to draw a scene on which Frankenstein (Aaron Eckhart), made up this is by the way, has just been brought back to life by electricity in a thunder storm. 

After drawing a basic body on the page, I needed to draw the face, I did this by focusing on the trailer for the film as I wanted to make him look similar to the actor but not 100%.So I started by creating a rough draft of the placement of his facial features.

Once I was happy with his facial features, I decided to place the scars on the body, now this is the point where I could'nt really see alot of the scars on the actor so I decided to place the scars I could see on the chest and the face but the arm scars and the neck scars I pretty much just guessed.

The finished product can be seen above, the shading of the body I am really happy with and the background is ok. I think that if I was to do this image again, I would probably make the background more detailed and overall have a bit more depth. I would also change how the rain is portrayed as it hits his skin. 

Sunday Sketches 1. Harley Quinn.

My first of many Sunday Sketches. (Week 1)

This is the first stage of my sketch of Harley Quinn. This Drawing was inspired by the classic 90's Batman Animated Adventure Television series such as the style of the characters facial features and costume design. 

I decided not to colour this sketch in but to leave it black and white at the moment as when I eventually get my new laptop with Photoshop I can add the correct colour scheme and style I want.

Art 1. Joker.

This is my development of my Joker sketch to the finished piece.

For inspiration on this piece I looked at the promotional photographs as well as the film "The Dark Knight" to get an idea for my Joker drawing.

As you can see from the first image, I used sketching pencils to first draw a circle which would be the head of the character. I then sketched a central line to position the eyes, nose and mouth in the right positions. I then roughly drew the eyes and the skin creases joining the eyebrow placement and the top of the nose. I then moved from the outer corners of both eyes and moved down in a diagonal line until both lines met with the central line. I then referred back to the images and drew out the nose. Followed by the placement of the lips. I then focused on where the hair would be flowing alongside the face and how the hairline would reach up to on the top of his head.  I then decided to place more details such as the creases on the forehead with would be highlighted from the face paint the character is wearing, along with the extension of the smile which is classic of the Joker character.                                                                                                          

Once I had roughly drawn all the positions of the characters features, I then used different pencils to bring out the details of the eyes, to show more depth within the character stare. the shading around the eyes needed to be darker than the other parts of detail with the pencils as I needed to show the darkness of the black face paint which was used around the Joker's eyes in the film. The hair was the next area i focuses on to give detail to as I needed to display the different directions the hair was flowing. 

When I finished sketching the Joker and placing detail with my normal graphite sketching pencils, I decided to colour the piece in. I used standard colouring pencils to add skin tone in areas of the face in which the face paint the character was wearing had been wiped or faded from perspiration or fighting. I then used red for the lips and showed the darker tone on areas of the lips to help the shading of them. I then decided to add colour to his clothes, the classic green and people suit from the comics and the jail scene from the film came to mind.

To finish the drawing, I used fine liners to add detail to the shaded areas to give more depth to the piece and details to specific areas such as the underlining of his lips, eyes and shirt.
